Saint Anthony the Great

Saint Anthony the Great (c. 251–356) was born into a wealthy Christian family in Egypt. While still a young man, he heard Christ's words in the Gospel: "If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor... then come, follow Me" (Matthew 19:21). Taking these words literally, he distributed his inheritance to the poor, entrusted the care of his younger sister to a community of Christian women, and withdrew into the Egyptian desert to dedicate his life entirely to prayer, fasting, and ascetic struggle.

For more than eighty years, Saint Anthony lived as a hermit, becoming renowned for his holiness, spiritual wisdom, and unwavering perseverance. He endured countless temptations and spiritual battles against demonic forces, overcoming them through humility, constant prayer, fasting, and complete trust in God. His example inspired thousands of men and women to embrace the monastic life, earning him the title "Father of Monasticism."

Among his most enduring teachings is the importance of balancing prayer and work, maintaining vigilance over one's thoughts, practicing humility, and relying entirely on God's grace in every spiritual struggle. His life reminds Christians that true victory over temptation is achieved through faith, perseverance, repentance, and unceasing prayer.

Saint Anthony the Great reposed in peace in 356, at the age of approximately 105, after a lifetime devoted to Christ. The Orthodox Church commemorates him annually on 17 January, honoring him as one of the greatest desert fathers and spiritual guides in Christian history.
