Saint John the Russian was a Christian confessor of the Orthodox Church who lived in the late 17th and early 18th centuries (c. 1690–1730 AD). Born in the region of modern-day Ukraine, he served as a soldier in the Russian army during the Russo-Turkish conflicts.
He was captured by Ottoman forces and taken to Asia Minor, where he was enslaved in the household of a Turkish officer in the town of Prokopi (modern-day Ürgüp, Turkey). He remained steadfast in his Orthodox Christian faith throughout his life, living in humility, prayer, and obedience despite harsh conditions.
In the Orthodox Christian tradition, he is especially venerated as a helper for those suffering from illness, hardship, and difficult life circumstances. Many faithful turn to him in prayer for healing, endurance in suffering, and strength during trials.
He is venerated as a confessor of the faith and a model of patience and spiritual endurance. His relics are kept in the Church of Saint John the Russian in Prokopi, Greece. He is commemorated on May 27 in the Orthodox Church.
