Saint Stephen the Archdeacon is venerated in the Orthodox Church as the first martyr of Christianity. He was one of the seven deacons chosen by the Apostles to serve the early Christian community, especially in acts of charity and service.
Filled with faith and the Holy Spirit, he boldly preached about Christ and bore witness to the Gospel. Because of his testimony, he was falsely accused and stoned to death. During his martyrdom, he prayed for his persecutors, following the example of Christ in forgiveness.
In Orthodox tradition, Saint Stephen is honored as a model of faith, courage, and selfless service, and as the first to bear witness to Christ through martyrdom.
