Saint Anthony the Great was an Orthodox Christian monk and one of the founders of Christian monasticism. He lived in Egypt between approximately 251–356 AD. After the death of his parents, he withdrew from the world and devoted his life to prayer, fasting, and ascetic struggle in the desert.

He is considered one of the first and most influential desert fathers, establishing a model of solitary monastic life that later shaped Orthodox monastic tradition. He endured long periods of spiritual struggle and temptation, remaining steadfast in prayer and devotion to God.

In the Orthodox Christian Church, he is venerated as the father of monasticism and a great ascetic, and he is commemorated on January 17.
