Saint Stephen the First Martyr and Archdeacon was one of the first deacons of the early Christian Church and is recognized as the first martyr of Christianity. He lived in the 1st century AD and was chosen to serve the early Christian community in Jerusalem, assisting the Apostles in works of charity and administration.
He was known for his strong faith and his preaching, which led to opposition from certain members of the Jewish council. He was accused of blasphemy, brought before the Sanhedrin, and ultimately stoned to death, becoming the first Christian martyr.
In the Orthodox Christian tradition, he is venerated as the First Martyr and Archdeacon, a model of faith, courage, and forgiveness. He is especially remembered for praying for those who were stoning him, asking for their forgiveness.
He is commemorated on December 27 in the Orthodox Church.
