The Holy Brâncoveanu Martyrs
The Holy Brâncoveanu Martyrs suffered for the Orthodox faith in 1714, during the reign of the Ottoman Empire. Prince Constantine Brâncoveanu, a wise and devout ruler of Wallachia, was renowned for his generous support of the Church, the construction of monasteries and churches, and the promotion of Orthodox Christian culture.
Arrested together with his four sons and his trusted counselor Ianache Văcărescu, they were brought before the Sultan and offered their freedom and wealth if they would renounce Christ and embrace Islam. All steadfastly refused. Before their execution, Saint Constantine encouraged his sons to remain faithful to Christ, reminding them that no earthly treasure could compare with the eternal Kingdom of God. On 15 August 1714, they were beheaded, receiving the crown of martyrdom.
Their witness continues to inspire Orthodox Christians as a profound example of steadfast faith, family unity, and unwavering devotion to Christ in the face of persecution. The Orthodox Church commemorates the Holy Brâncoveanu Martyrs each year on 16 August.
