Censer

Censers for incense (church)—also called thuribles—are sacred vessels used in Christian worship to burn incense as a sign of prayer rising to heaven and as an act of reverence.

In many traditions, especially within the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church, the censer is a metal container suspended on chains. Inside, hot charcoal is placed, and grains of incense are added to produce fragrant smoke. The censer is then gently swung by a priest or deacon during services.

The use of incense is deeply symbolic, often associated with passages like Psalm 141 (“Let my prayer rise like incense before you”). It is commonly used during the Divine Liturgy or Mass, at processions, blessings, funerals, and major feast days. The rising smoke represents prayer, purification, and the presence of the divine.

Censers themselves are often beautifully crafted from brass, silver, or gold-plated metal, sometimes decorated with crosses, bells, or intricate engravings. In Eastern practice, small bells attached to the chains may ring as the censer is swung, adding an auditory dimension to the ritual.

Overall, church censers are both functional liturgical tools and rich symbols of worship, linking the physical act of offering incense with spiritual devotion and reverence.
