Created according to the traditional principles of Byzantine iconography, this sacred image reflects the dignity, tenderness, and spiritual mission of the Mother of God as the one who leads the faithful toward her Son, Jesus Christ.
The Virgin Mary “The Guide” (Hodegetria)
This icon is based on the renowned Hodegetria (“She Who Shows the Way”) icon from Xenophontos Monastery on Mount Athos, as well as on the venerated icon of the Mother of God from Mihai Vodă Church in Bucharest. Both representations belong to the rich Byzantine iconographic tradition of the Hodegetria type, in which the Virgin Mary presents the Christ Child as the true path to salvation and eternal life.
The icon of the Mother of God from Mihai Vodă Church in Bucharest is celebrated annually on 21 January. On this sacred feast day, the faithful participate in a solemn service of vigil, a procession around the church, and the celebration of the Divine Liturgy, honoring the Mother of God through prayer and devotion.
