Saint George the Great Martyr

Saint George (c. 275–303) was born into a Christian family in Cappadocia and became a distinguished officer in the Roman army during the reign of Emperor Diocletian. When the emperor began persecuting Christians, George openly confessed his faith in Jesus Christ, refusing to renounce Christianity despite severe torture and the promise of wealth and honor. He remained steadfast in his faith and ultimately suffered martyrdom, becoming one of the Church's greatest witnesses to Christ.

In Orthodox tradition, Saint George is especially honored for his courage, loyalty to God, and willingness to sacrifice his earthly life for the truth of the Gospel. He is often depicted on horseback defeating a dragon, a symbolic image representing Christ's victory over evil, sin, and the powers of darkness through the faith and steadfastness of His saints.

Saint George teaches Christians to remain faithful to Christ in times of trial, to live with courage, integrity, and humility, and to place their trust in God's providence above worldly power or personal gain. Through his prayers, the faithful seek strength in spiritual struggles, protection in times of danger, healing, and perseverance in the Christian life. He is also widely regarded as a patron of soldiers, farmers, shepherds, and all those who strive to defend truth and justice.

Saint George is commemorated annually on 23 April in the Orthodox Church.
