Saint John the Baptist was chosen by God to prepare the way for the coming of Jesus Christ. Born to the righteous Zechariah and Elizabeth through a miraculous birth, he lived a life of prayer, fasting, and repentance in the wilderness. He called the people of Israel to conversion, proclaiming the Kingdom of God and baptizing those who repented in the River Jordan.

John had the unique privilege of baptizing Jesus Christ, witnessing the revelation of the Holy Trinity as the Holy Spirit descended in the form of a dove and the voice of the Father was heard from heaven. Because of his courage in preaching the truth and condemning sin without fear, he was imprisoned and ultimately beheaded by order of King Herod, becoming one of the Church's greatest martyrs.

Saint John the Baptist is honored as the last of the Old Testament prophets and the first witness of the New Testament. His life remains a model of humility, repentance, faithfulness, and complete devotion to God's will.

The Orthodox Church commemorates his principal feast on 24 June, the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist, while his Beheading is observed on 29 August, and several other feast days throughout the liturgical year honor significant events of his life.
