Saints Constantine and Helen
Saint Constantine the Great (c. 272–337) was the first Roman emperor to embrace Christianity and played a decisive role in the history of the Church. Following his victory at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge, traditionally associated with the vision of the Cross and the words "In this sign, conquer," he issued the Edict of Milan in 313, granting religious freedom to Christians throughout the Roman Empire. He also convened the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea in 325, which defended the Orthodox faith against the Arian heresy and affirmed the divinity of Jesus Christ.
Saint Helen, the mother of Emperor Constantine, is especially honored for her deep piety and her pilgrimage to the Holy Land. According to Orthodox tradition, she discovered the True Cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified and promoted the construction of churches at many of Christianity's holiest sites, including the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.
Together, Saints Constantine and Helen are revered as Equal-to-the-Apostles because of their extraordinary contribution to the spread and protection of the Christian faith. They are remembered as examples of courage, wisdom, generosity, and steadfast devotion to Christ. Through their prayers, the faithful seek strength in defending the faith, guidance in leadership, unity within families, and God's blessing upon their lives.
The Orthodox Church commemorates Saints Constantine and Helen annually on 21 May.
