STUDIES

The European Committee on Herbal Medicinal Products concluded that, based on its long-term use, ethanol-extracted Saw Palmetto fruit can be used to relieve lower urinary tract symptoms (such as difficulty starting urination or frequent need to urinate) associated with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), after serious conditions have been ruled out by a doctor. The way Saw Palmetto works is not fully understood, but laboratory studies suggest it works by reducing the action of male sex hormones like testosterone, which play a role in causing prostate gland hyperplasia, and it may also have anti-inflammatory effects. The committee's conclusions about the use of ethanol-extracted Saw Palmetto for relief from lower urinary tract symptoms associated with BPH are based on its "traditional use" in this condition. This means that although there are not enough data from clinical trials, the effectiveness of these herbal extracts has been shown, and there is evidence that they have been used safely in this way for at least 30 years (including at least 15 years within the EU). Moreover, the intended use does not require medical supervision. The beneficial effect of Nettle root on BPH seems to be supported by in vitro and in vivo pharmacological studies. It appears likely that stigmasterol binding to sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), aromatase, epidermal growth factor, and prostate steroid membrane receptors are involved in the effect of Nettle root action on the prostate. Since the late 1970s / early 1980s, the medical use of the aerial parts of Epilobium angustifolium and Epilobium parviflorum has become very popular among the people in several European countries for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia as well as in bladder or kidney disorders. Products containing the active substance Epilobium parviflorum, herba, continue to be used for medical purposes in CZ and HU. Additionally, combination products with Epilobium continue to be marketed in Austria, the Czech Republic, and Hungary. It is used as a medicine with "traditional use" only for the indication of benign prostatic hyperplasia.
